Scunthorpe is a large industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire, of which it is the main administrative centre. It is the third largest settlement in Lincolnshire, after Lincoln and Grimsby.
A predominantly industrial town, Scunthorpe is the UK’s largest steel processing centre and is known as the “Industrial Garden Town”. From early on, the largest operator within the steel industry was Tata Steel Europe. Today, the steel industry remains the major employer in the area, with associated steelworks including metal engineering and a BOC plant.
Another large industry in the town if FMCG, particularly food production, distribution and retailing. There are a number of major food production companies in Scunthorpe, such as 2 Sisters Food Group, Key Country Foods and The Sauce Company. All of the big food retailers are also represented in the area, including Tesco Extra, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Asda and Marks and Spencer’s.
