Northampton is a market town and civil parish in the East Midlands, situated on the River Nene. As the county town of Northamptonshire, Northampton is the largest settlement within the unitary authority of West Northamptonshire. In the Middle Ages, the town rose to national significance with the establishment of Northampton Castle, an occasional royal residence which regularly hosted the Parliament of England.
Northampton was once a major centre of shoemaking and other leather industries. A large number of old shoe factories remain, mostly now converted to offices or accommodation. Engineering became a major employer in Northampton during the post war years, but today Northampton’s main private sector employers are now in FMCG and finance rather than manufacturing. Large companies in these industries include Avon Products, Barclaycard, Blacks Leisure Group, Nationwide Building Society, Panasonic, Coca-Cola and Schweppes.
Both the education and health sectors are also growing in Northampton. The University of Northampton is a major employer, along with St Andrew’s Healthcare, a national mental health charity. St Andrew’s Hospital is a flagship hospital and the UK’s largest psychiatric hospital based in Northampton.
