North East England has a diverse and thriving economy and is recognised for its strengths in a number of key industry sectors. An increasing number of companies are moving to the North East to take advantage of their unmatched operating costs, superb access to UK and overseas markets, and highly skilled workforce renowned for its outstanding productivity.
The North East is home to a well-established advanced manufacturing sector, with global giants such as Nissan, Hitachi Rail, Caterpillar, Nestle, GSK and Technip FMC. The region has specialisms in automotive manufacturing, rail, aerospace, electronics, pharmaceuticals and subsea engineering, plus a well-connected supply chain. The North East also has a large skills base that supplies an innovative and highly-developed workforce, with more than 116,000 people working in manufacturing roles, including 69,000 specialist workers employed in advanced manufacturing.
North East England also has a thriving pharmaceuticals sector that is supported by a wider, world-renowned life sciences offer. Their highly developed scientific and engineering skills have attracted global pharmaceutical and biologics manufacturing companies, and they have some of the most recognised research, product development, testing and manufacturing facilities in the world. In particular, large global pharmaceutical manufacturers located in the region include GSK, MSD, Accord Healthcare, Recipharm, Sterling Pharma Solutions and Piramal. The North East is also home to two of the UK’s largest specials manufacturers – Quantum Pharma and The Specials Laboratory.
