Once the largest coal-exporting port in Wales, Newport is now a vibrant city with a fascinating history. Famous for its docks and as the third largest city in Wales, Newport is full of cultural surprises and is certainly a Welsh city on the rise. The region is home to more than twice the share of manufacturing businesses as the UK, a sector which currently makes up 21% of the local economy versus just 10% for the UK as a whole. The Newport region manufactures almost half of all electronic, optical and electrical goods made in Wales, along with 30% of all metal manufacturing and one-third of all food and drink processing activities in the country. Despite this, the public sector, including education and health services, remains the largest source of employment within the Newport region. Together, these provide employment to 84,000 people, nearly one-third of the entire local workforce. Meanwhile, retail activities, hotels and restaurants are the second biggest employer in the region, accounting for 49,000 jobs, or 18% of the total workforce.
