Luton is a large town, borough and unitary authority area of Bedfordshire, England. Once famous for its hat-making, today Luton is an employment centre that provides job opportunities for both its own residents and those of surrounding areas. Home to a large Vauxhall Motors factory, manufacturing employment remains higher than national average. Another major employer and a strong driver of the Luton economy is the London Luton Airport, employing more than 8,000 people which equates to around 10% of total employment in the town. The airport will continue to be a key driver of Luton’s economic activity, with planning consent being granted to permit the expansion of the airport to over 18 million passengers per year from the current 12 million; this is expected to generate an additional 5000 jobs. Other major employers in Luton include the council, NHS, EasyJet, TUI UK Ltd, Monarch Airlines and General Motors.
