Ipswich is a large port town and borough in Suffolk, of which it is the county town. A number of sectors in Ipswich already provide significant employment, including financial services, public administration and freight and logistics. However, several other key sectors are experiencing substantial growth, such as Education, Tourism, Energy and Manufacturing.

Being the county town of agricultural Suffolk, industry around Ipswich has had a strong farming bias, home to Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies Ltd, one of the most famous agricultural manufacturers. More recently, however, public sector activity has increased in the town. Alongside Ipswich Borough Council, Suffolk County Council has its HQ in the town. There is also significant provision of post 16 education, with Suffolk New College, Suffolk One and University Campus Suffolk located in Ipswich. If these employers are combined with Ipswich Hospital and other ‘local’ offices, then the public sector represents the single largest employment sector in the town.
