The East Midlands, with a population of around 4.8 million, is the eighth largest region in England and includes Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire. The main employment sectors in the East Midlands are manufacturing, logistics, retail, adult health and social care.

The East Midlands is at the heart of the UK manufacturing and advanced engineering, accounting for 20% of UK manufacturing output through world-leading business and industry like Alstom, Bombardier, Jaguar Land Rover, JCB, National Grid, Rolls Royce and Toyota UK. The unique manufacturing expertise in the East Midlands spans global high-value sectors; from world-class automotive and aerospace engineering, to renewable energy, medical and agricultural technologies.

The East Midlands area is also renowned for its strong customer-facing services, such as retail, football, leisure, hospitality and healthcare, with many of these FMCG businesses featuring strongly in the East Midlands Top 500 Companies listing. The region’s well-known FMCG brands, like Wilko, Everards, Boots, Dunelm and NEXT are among the best companies in the East Midlands. More than 150,000 people work in retail across the region – more than in any other employment sector. Together, the retail and wholesale sectors in the East Midlands are valued at £25.1 billion with 178,000 employees.
