Blackburn is a large industrial town located in Lancashire, north of the West Pennine Moors. It is a former mill town, where textiles have been produced since the middle of the 13th century. Today, however, the town has developed an incredibly diverse and resilient economic base, with over 4,900 business. The borough contributes around 9% of the wider Lancashire business base, with five main areas making up over half, including professional scientific and technical services, retail, business administration and support services, manufacturing and construction. Public sector employment is also significant in the borough, with substantial employment in local government and the health sector. In particular, Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provide a large number of jobs for local people.
