Today we’ve finally seen a proposed amendment to the Government’s emergency coronavirus bill to support self-employed workers and freelancers.

After support was promised from Chancellor Rishi Sunak last week to cover 80% of wages to prevent companies from laying staff off, many questions were raised as to how self-employed workers will cover their costs.

Before today the only support and assurance given for self-employed workers was that they would receive Statutory Sick Pay, only £94.25 a week. However if passed, the bill promises to pay self-employed people 80% of their net monthly earnings averaged over the last three years, or £2,917 (whichever is lower).
